May 2026: I was recently reminded that I have tended to write some kind of rhyming homage to Spring in recent years around about now… This time though something a bit different as I’m not feeling in so much of a rhyming mood today… 🙂
21st May 2026:
Too Hot Today
Already too hot today!
Yet it is not yet Summer.
The air seems almost
Too warm to breathe
The change happened so fast:
Even a frog boiled this quickly
Would have been prompted
To jump to safety, so my lungs,
Having no option to jump,
Feel shocked and sapped.
Too many flies have also been
Almost magically generated
By the sudden warmth:
They square the circle,
Lazily executing their repetitive,
Randomly angular flight paths
Under the shade of the deck.
Unhampered by the heat
An earwig also appears
Busily bustling its way
Towards me along the edge
Of the unkempt garden table:
I’m compelled to flick it away
Thanks to a long-held prejudice
That, in my book at least,
Categorizes these insects
(Along with wasps and mosquitoes)
As unwelcome in my vicinity.
It is so warm that even
The Nightingale chooses to
Impose an intermission
In his incessant concerto.
Conversely, some small birds
Ever more excitedly chitter
While perched in a large pine:
The Serin’s song sounds as if
It is always angry or irritated;
But, perhaps they too are
Simply complaining that it is
Already too hot today?
